studio entry 1

I have a few rough ideas for my thesis. I'd like to do something with letters, maybe a small series of collaging them, painting them, manipulating them on the computer... I'm not completely sure, but I know it should involve type in one way or another. I also have had ideas about the evolution of handwriting. I heard recently that in schools they don't event teach cursive anymore. I'm not sure how true it is, I'll have to research it. I've been trying to observe people's handwriting. I feel like I'm always reading something typed or on the screen. It's really interesting to see how different people write their letters. I was looking at my grandmother's handwriting and her letters always seem the same. My handwriting always looks different, depending on the reason I'm writing. For quick notes in a class, it's usually sloppy, but something for work has to be clear, writing to a friend or just something casually written for myself- it's always different.  I'm wondering if I can do something involving the handwritten word.
I've been collaging using letters, which is something I haven't ever intentionally done. Above is the most recent one I've done, although the letters are cut up. I don't want to work with any words because I don't want to make a viewer think one thing or another. Right now I want my independent work to be open to interpretation. I also am enjoying cutting the letters up to see what forms they create. I think working with a letter and not mutilating it in some way will be more of a challenge. I'll be trying that next.
